TRAVEL IN STYLE TO THE CHRISTMAS MARKETS AT YORK, DURHAM OR NEWCASTLE
In the run-up to Christmas it is traditional for towns and cities across Britain to present a Christmas market, and this excursion will take you to your choice of three of the best in Britain, and all in cities that offer a wealth of history.
First is YORK (approx 1200-1800) where the festive wonderland includes an array of local traders and artisan products, as it has done since 1992.
Next is DURHAM (approx 1315-1645), where the epic skyline of castle and cathedral looks down on an historic city centre, in which over 200 independent traders display their wares.
Finally we cross the King Edward Bridge (one of seven bridges across the river) to reach NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE (approx 1330-1630), where there are stalls around Grey’s Monument, in Grainger Market and on the Quayside.
For those of a railway mind, this train was originally due to be hauled by Class 55 Deltic, No. 55009, but due to a fault with the locomotive, this has been substituted by BR Class 40 No. 40145 from Burton-upon-Trent (sidings), courtesy of the Class Forty Preservation Society, a WCRC diesel will work the train from Swindon – Burton-upon-Trent/return. Please note, that we will not be stopping at Burton-upon-Trent station.
This train will be operated with the Riviera Trains vintage MK1 carriages.
